Hiking Toll

This was mainly done for the landscape. I was experimenting in view with turning a tree into an ecosystem rather than doing to a terrain as one normally would. I really just added the character to give it a sense of scale. The toll keeper was done in poser. Everything else was done in Vue. A bit of post production color tweaking was done using gimp.

I was looking to do a nice sunset cloudscape to capture some reds and purples. The figure was done using poser and its cloth room. Everything else, including the final render, was done in Vue. A bit of post production was done using Gimp.

Last Stand at the Druid’s Pool

This is a fan illustration done for the novel “Black Wizards” by Douglas Niles. The characters were all done using Poser and exported to Vue. Vue was used to generate the scenery and to do the final render. Post production was done with Gimp.

Once a Temple

I wanted to create an image with some fancy standing rocks. I like how the cloudscape worked out on this one as well. Pretty much everything was done using Vue. The rider at the bottom is a model I did in poser some time ago and reuse from time to time.

Druid

This is another fan-art for the novel Darkwalker on Moonshae.

It features the druid (and one of the primary protagonists) Robyn Moonsinger. Also included is the unicorn, Kamerynn and the faerie-dragon Newt. This comes from a scene near the end of the book, at which point, the Kamerynn is blind and relies on Newt to be his eyesight. I tried to suggest this by having Newt’s shadow fall across Kamerynn’s eye.

All three characters were created in Poser and exported to Vue. The scenery and final render were done using Vue. I used Gimp to tweak the colors a bit and emphasize the early evening mood.

Stormfield

I was looking to make a nice cloudscape above a field for this one. The idea was to present a sort of oppressive approaching rainstorm feeling. Later, I added in the farmhouse and girl to spice it up a bit.

Firbolg Attack

This is a fan-art for the book “Darkwalker on Moonshae” by Douglas Niles. This scene occurs early in the story and involves the protagonists first encounter with firbolgs, nine foot tall giants that pretty much resemble stereotypical cave men. Poser for the figures, Vue for everything else.

This is a vue render I did for fun. It is supposed to be an image of Corwell, a location from the novel "Darkwalker on Moonshae". I really stressed my systems memory with this one. There are a lot of polygons in the ships and town houses. Plus the foreground and mid-ground land is covered with individual grass objects.

This one was a tough one. My computer kept running out of memory and crashing. This is an illustration for a novel that takes place in a future that includes anthropomorphic dogs. I should have another one in the series ready soon, but it's hard to say. With a newborn, I'm finding that I don't have much time for art these days (hence the long period since the last post.

Still working on my next autumn scene. I added some structures in the background ( Early Medieval Saxon houses I made using Blender) and a foreground, the girl and the tree. The girl is just the Victoria 3 model for poser. The dress was done in the poser cloth room.

This is a work in progress. I spent a number of hours last night trying to recreate a field I saw while hiking yesterday. Here in Georgia, it's still a bit early in the fall and there is still some green mixed in with the reds and yellows. I added the dino just for a temporary center piece.

This is an illustration I did for a first time novelist who is writing a Wild West themed fantasy novel. I resused the same setting as my previous two works as I liked it so much. The ogre and the gunslinger were both done in poser. The ogre features the fur shawl that I made and you can read about a few posts back. The final render was done in Vue.

A Girl and Her Zuni

After looking at it a lot, I decided to make a few changes to my Zuniceritops work. The big differences are that I added a girl in a white dress (remember this is art not science) and a mountain in the background. I also changed the lighting and colors up a bit.

I made a presentation on an idea I had called a Tower Farm. I used Vue to generate all of the slides.

A Tower Farm is essentially a greenhouse taken to the level of a skyscraper. Crops are grown inside using aeroponics, a process of growing plants without soil. The internal environment has controlled levels of water and carbon dioxide, fed by attached tanks, for superior crop yields. Being a sealed environment, it does not loose water to evaporation, and it is pest free. A Tower Farm is built in arid, agriculturally deficient region where crops cannot currently be grown without a great deal of wasted irrigation water, expensive fertilizer, and harmful pesticides. It is constructed with glass walls and floors for maximum use of sunlight and reduces its power consumption by taking advantage of solar panels located on the roof. A loading dock on the bottom story makes it easy to transport harvested crops away from the site. The concept is also scalable as numerous Tower Farms can be built in clusters and to varying heights.

Ogre Shawl

I wanted to make a picture with a wild looking ogre. I wanted to give him a bit of furs for clothing so I decided to create some on my own. In order to prepare, I loaded Poser, deleted the default figure and added in the Greater Troll character available from Daz3d. After turning off the inverse kinematics, I opened the joint editor and zeroed the figure. Then, I exported him as an obj. The point of this is to be able to use the object as a frame of reference.

I loaded blender then imported the ogre obj file. Then I added a filled in circle just above his shoulders.

After multi-subdividing all of the internal edges 12 times (the ones going to a point in the middle), I deleted all of the internal faces that intersected the ogre’s head and moved some individual vertices to smooth the opening a bit. With Proportal Edit Falloff on, I then moved some of the outer vertices to give it a rough edge.

Then, I deleted the ogre, leaving only the shawl. I then created a UV map for it and gave it a fur texture from a jpg I found on the web. I exported it as an obj, then imported it into Poser. I created a copy of the UV Map jpeg in black and white and used it for the bump map. After running it through a cloth simulation I got the image below.

An illustration for the first chapter of R.A. Salvatore's "The Demon Awakens". This was just for fun, not actually a commission or anything like that. I've just been reading the book and decided to create my own illustrations for it.

Ankheg - segmented body

I started work today on the segmented body of my Ankheg model. It is really just a big cylinder that I extruded from the back of the head. After subdivided the lengthwise edges I just positioned the rings along the y-axis where the segment joints were (4 per segment) and shrank the inner two rings to create the joint. Next, I subdivided the lengthwise edges on each segment into 5 rings, then sized each ring to give each segment a rounded look.
